Efficiency

Current engine-pump-combinations are characterised by having a near maximum efficiency in a limited area. In most applications, the system is never operated at the best point. Therefore the average cycle efficiency is often much lower than the best point.
In the Chiron the emissions and efficiency can be optimised for the specific movement of the free piston. The piston movement itself is not influenced by the engine speed. As a result the optimised values for emissions and efficiency are in principle valid for the complete frequency, flow and power domain. In other words, the Chiron will have a better cycle efficiency and lower average emissions than the equivalent conventional engine. During tests, the free piston engine reached an indicated efficiency of more than 50%.
