Girolamo Cardano (1501-1567) was an Italian physician, astrologer and mathematician. Although the principle of the cardan shaft is named after him there is evidence that he is not the inventor. Cardano learnt about it from a man from Bratislava and wrote about it.
"A man is nothing but his mind; if that be out of order, all is amiss, and if it be well, the rest is at ease"

Current engine-pump-combinations are
characterised by having a near maximum efficiency in a limited area. In
most applications, the system is never operated at the best point. Therefore
the average cycle efficiency is often much lower than the best point.
