Unable to bear the sight of blood, Jean-Bertrand-Léon Foucault (1819 - 1868) gave up on his medicine study. As a mathematician and physicist, Foucault was interested in invention and experiment. He worked on various projects, such as the invention of the gyroscope and the reflecting telescope as well as research into the speed of light in air and water. With the giant pendulum set up in the Pantheon in Paris (1851) he delivered the first dynamical proof that the Earth is spinning on its axis.

Soot and NOx measurements were performed on several free piston engines. It was proven that the Chiron can meet current and future emission legislations. The figure on the left shows the results of measurements on previous prototypes of Chiron. It was proven that the combination of a high efficiency combined with low soot and low NOx emissions is possible. |
