Years before introducing the heimlich maneuver, Henry Heimlich developed a valve that drains blood and air out of the chest cavity (1964). For this Heimlich became well-known in Vietnam and the U.S., where the lives of thousands of American and Vietnamese soldiers shot in the chest were saved by this simple device. The heimlich maneuver, a procedure to force an object out of the mouth or throat to prevent people from choking was introduced in 1974. From that time, it has saved many lives.
