It is not really clear who invented the Dutch Haagse Hopjes. Was it baron Hendrik Hop (1723-1808) who left his not entirely empty cup of coffee too close to the hot stove, thus turning the left-over into the sweet, coffee-flavoured candy? Or was it his baker, who made the candies especially for him, as Hop was not allowed to drink coffee due to a weak heart? In any case, during his life Hop was a true consumer of the coffee candies, which later got his name.
