The Quetelet Index is a measure of obesity: QI = weight in kilograms / (height in meters)2. If QI > 30 then a person is obese. Belgian mathematician and astronomer Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874) believed it was possible to determine the average physical and intellectual features of a population. Through gathering the 'facts of life', individual behavior could be assessed against to that of an 'average man'. He believed it was possible to identify the underlying regularities for normal and abnormal behavior.
