After a journey to the USA and Germany in 1936, Andrej Nicolajevitsj Tupolev (1888-1972), director of the Tupolev air plane plant, was arrested for state treason and sabotage. He was sentenced to 5 years of prison camp. There he designed the TU-2, the first Soviet-Russian twin-engine bomber. Mass production of this bomber started in 1939, but it took until 1941 before Tupolev was released and rehabilitated.
