The Bloody Mary cocktail, a spicy mix of vodka, lemon and tomato juices, Worcestershire sauce, and Tabasco is said to be first served by Pete Petiot, a barman in Paris, 1921. It was named after Mary I (1553-1558), the queen of England who was a staunch catholic. Her first act on the throne was to repeal the Protestant legislation of her brother, Edward VI. Her goal was the re-establishment of Catholicism in England. Nearly 300 people were burned at the stake for heresy, earning Mary the nickname, "Bloody Mary”.
