There was a striking contrast in the background of the founders of the Rolls-Royce
automobile factory. Charles Rolls (1877-1910) was the son of British aristocrats.
He studied in Eton and Cambridge. Frederick Royce (1863-1933) grew up in a
poor family and never had a chance to study. Everything he learned was acquired
through working experience and self-study. Royce built his his own car, Rolls
sold imported cars but wished to sell cars made in Britain. That is how the
co-operation of Rolls and Royce began.
